Apocalypse Dreamin’
(2018)
Over 55000 trees were uprooted after Super Typhoon Mangkhut struck Hong Kong in September, 2018 - the most intense storm in Hong Kong’s history. It was practically apocalypse outside my home in Ap Lei Chau. Despite such disruption, people went to work as usual. This series recreates our daily routine in the face of disaster: waking up, getting dressed, queuing for buses, surviving on cup noodles… Every action was completed in the dark within 30 seconds of exposure - not unlike our deadline-chasing reality. Is such adherence to the routine a ridiculous attempt to maintain a sense of order? Or is it the act of a hopeful Sisyphus?
Another storm of the times brews a year after Mangkhut. If a diseased body must break down to heal, maybe such disruption of order is exactly we need.
