Healing Hands
Fringe Club, Hong Kong, November 2022
Healing Hands is a group exhibition curated by Katie Graham, featuring the works of 10 women artists based in Hong Kong, who found solace in creating works with their own hands during Covid.
.
Works featured in this exhibition are a rumination about touch, trauma and healing.
Raised as a city dweller, I often got scrapes or bruises when I first started shooting outdoors. At an early spring shoot by the sea, a wave crashed over me and pushed me towards the shore. I was soaked and left with two 3-inch, gaping wounds on my left lower leg, among other minor ones.
In the ensuing days, I dutifully washed the cuts with saline and replaced the dressing every morning and evening. This daily observation and caress of the wounds unexpectedly turned into a self-love ritual that helped me recover from the shock of my reckless venture.
Such is the healing power of touch on both body and mind, restoring the most broken parts of ourselves even if we felt like cracked land in a rainless spring.
Hands are also my gateway to strength and imagination. From clicking the shutter, carrying equipment to editing in Photoshop, they are the trusted translator of my vision and also my source of grounding. When I’m not photographing, I like to journal with pen and paper, where my thoughts reveal themselves.
